Music
We are proud to, yet again, be an official Music Mark School for the 2023/24 academic year. They continue to recognise the value that we as a school place on high quality music education and extra curricular opportunities for our children.
Curriculum
We have planned our music curriculum with our drivers at the forefront, ensuring diversity, culture and possibilities are reflected in the pieces of music and musicians we study.
Our music overview below gives further detail about how the curriculum is organised.
EYFS
Children in the Early Years Foundation Stage follow a programme of musical experiences which will fulfil aspects within the Expressive Arts and Design strand of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Children are given opportunities to explore musical instruments and pattern making, and to listen to and create their own music. Whole class music lessons are taught, using the Charanga music scheme. This provides a balance of listening, appraising, musical activities and performance. Children in EYFS are building a large repertoire of songs each week to supplement this.
Key Stage 1
During key stage 1 children listen carefully and respond physically to a wide range of different kinds of music. They play musical instruments and sing a variety of songs from memory, adding accompaniments and creating short compositions, with increasing confidence, imagination and control. They explore and enjoy the way sounds and silence can create different moods and effects. Children in Year 1 and 2 have the opportunity to learn the recorder through whole class tuition in the Spring term.
Key Stage 2
During key stage 2 children sing songs and play instruments with increasing confidence, skill, expression and awareness of their own contribution to a group or class performance. They improvise, and develop their own musical compositions, in response to a variety of different stimuli, with increasing personal involvement, independence and creativity. They explore their thoughts and feelings through responding physically, intellectually and emotionally to a variety of different kinds of music from different times and cultures.
